Hiroshima: Killing Thousands of People At 8:15 in the morning, on August 6, 1945, the United States dropped the first nuclear weapon ever used in a war. Little Boy was dropped from a B-29 bomber over the Japanese city of Hiroshima1. The blast itself and the radioactive fall out killed around one hundred thousand people and demolished the city. Did the Japanese bring this upon them selves? What was the role of the Japanese civilians in the United States decision to drop the bomb? In actuality, the Japanese citizens had no role in the decision to use the bomb. Historians say, hindsight is twenty twenty, so now we have a better picture of what really happened, and can also better evaluate the decision to drop the bomb. The†¦show more content†¦Many accounts of the dropping of the atomic bomb often claim that the military was unaware of how powerful the bomb dropped on Hiroshima was. This is only partly true. Little Boy was equivalent to twelve and a half kilotons of TNT4. This bomb was less powerful than the ones previously tested, which averaged to be around ten thousand pounds. The bomb in the second test at Trinity, in mid July of 1945, ripped the doors of a barn over three miles away from the site. Wild jackrabbits were also found partly vaporized more than 800 yards from the blast. This also only describes details about the explosion itself and not the ultraviolet and radioactive effects of a nuclear explosion. The report from the test shows that monitors of the experiment picked up dangerously high levels of radioactive particles in an area 30 miles by 90 miles stretching to the northeast of the test site5. Ironically Japan is about 150 miles wide where Hiroshima rests in the mid dle. If the same bomb used in the test was used on Hiroshima, it would have covered half the width of the country in radiation. The United States can no longer legitimately claim that they did not know the power of the bomb they were dropping.
